Website cost guide · United Kingdom

How much does a website cost in the UK?

Prices in pounds, and the three things UK businesses should check before they sign: VAT on the quote, cookie consent and the ICO data protection fee.

The short answer

From £629 for a small business site

For a small business in the UK, a website of up to 5 pages on a premium WordPress theme starts at £629 with us and takes about 15 days. A custom-coded site of up to 8 pages, built in Astro, Next.js or React, starts at £1,590 and takes about 4 weeks. Fixing an existing site starts at £199, and looking after it costs £39 a month. Before you compare quotes, check whether each one includes VAT at 20%.

Three things to check in the UK

Checked against the official pages. Ask about each one before you sign anything.

  1. §1

VAT at 20%: included or on top?

The standard VAT rate in the UK is 20%, and a business registers for VAT once its taxable turnover goes over £90,000 a year. Some studios and freelancers are not registered and some are, so two quotes for the same site can differ by a fifth for that reason alone. Ask every studio whether its price includes VAT before you compare.

  2. §2

Cookie consent before analytics and ads

Under the ICO's cookie rules, a site must explain the cookies it sets and get a clear yes before it sets any that are not strictly necessary, such as analytics or advertising cookies. Carrying on browsing does not count as consent. Ask how the new site handles this: a banner with a real choice, and no tracking before the yes.

  3. §3

    The ICO data protection fee

Organisations that use personal information, sole traders included, need to pay the ICO a data protection fee unless they are exempt. A website with a contact form, a booking form or a shop collects personal information, so check with the ICO whether your business has to pay before the site goes live.

What moves the price

Six things that decide the cost

Storvexa Your quote, line by line

  1. 01

    Pages and content

Five pages cost less than twenty. Writing the copy, finding photos and moving content from an old site all take time, so say up front who supplies them.

  2. 02

    Theme or custom code

A premium WordPress theme is the quickest and cheapest route. A site written in our own code costs more, loads faster and has no page-builder plugins to keep updating.

  3. 03

What the site has to do

A contact form is simple. Online booking, payments, client logins or a shop each add work, because each has to be built, tested and kept safe.

  4. 04

    Languages and markets

Every extra language means translated pages and its own search setup. Prices in more than one currency add a little more.

  5. 05

    Connections to your tools

Linking the site to a CRM, a booking calendar, an accounting tool or a payment provider is quoted per connection, after we have seen what the tool allows.

  6. 06

    Speed and search work

Basic Google setup comes with every site. Full on-page SEO, a Google Business Profile and analytics come with the custom-coded package.

The costs people forget

  1. §1

    Domain and hosting

They are paid to the provider every year. We set the site up on your own domain and hosting with free SSL, so the accounts stay in your name.

  2. §2

    Changes after launch

Ask how long changes stay free. With us it is 6 days for a Basic site and 30 days for a custom-coded one; after that, small changes are part of the care plan.

  3. §3

    Keeping it safe

Updates, backups and security checks never stop. Our care plan covers them for £39 a month, with one hour of small changes, and you can cancel any time.

  4. §4

    Words and pictures

If nobody has written the pages yet, someone has to. Agree before the start who writes them and who pays for photos.

Questions UK businesses ask

Before they ask anyone for a quote.

Ask us anything else

With us, a 5-page WordPress site starts at the Basic Website price and a custom-coded site at the Business Website price, both shown in pounds on this page. Other studios price differently, so compare what each quote includes, and whether VAT is included.

Mostly because of what is included: the number of pages, whether the design is a theme or made from scratch, who writes the copy, and whether hosting, the domain and care after launch are in the price. VAT is the other difference: a quote from a VAT-registered business may include 20% that another quote leaves out.

You do. The domain and hosting are registered in your name. After the final payment you have full admin access on WordPress, or the full source code on your own Git account for a custom-coded site.

In three steps tied to work you can see: 25% to start, 25% when half the work is done and 50% when the site is complete.
