North Carolina rules to check before you buy a website
These are North Carolina rules and programs, on top of the US-wide points in our country guide. They tell you what to ask; they are not tax or legal advice.

§1
Sales tax depends on what you receive and how the invoice is split
North Carolina taxes certain digital property, which includes digital audiovisual works such as video. In an August 3, 2026 private letter ruling, NCDOR found the charges of a remote marketing and design firm taxable because part of what it delivered was digital audiovisual work and its professional fees were not stated separately on the invoice. A private ruling binds only that taxpayer, but it shows what to ask: does the quote list design and development separately from video or other digital files, and does it add any North Carolina tax? Check with NCDOR if you are unsure.

§2
Mecklenburg County added 1% sales tax on July 1, 2026
Mecklenburg County, which includes Charlotte, levied an additional 1% local sales and use tax from July 1, 2026, taking its general rate to 8.25%. Rates still differ from county to county. If any part of a quote is taxable, ask which county rate it uses, and compare it with NCDOR's notice and current rate table.

The Identity Theft Protection Act covers data your website collects
Under North Carolina's Identity Theft Protection Act, businesses that suffer a security breach of personal information must notify the people affected without unreasonable delay, and report the breach to the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division and the three major consumer reporting agencies. If your site takes names, emails, bookings or payments, ask your studio where form submissions are stored, who can reach them, and how the site is kept updated.

What moves the price
Six things that decide the cost
Storvexa Your quote, line by line
-
01
Pages and content
Five pages cost less than twenty. Writing the copy, finding photos and moving content from an old site all take time, so say up front who supplies them.
-
02
Theme or custom code
A premium WordPress theme is the quickest and cheapest route. A site written in our own code costs more, loads faster and has no page-builder plugins to keep updating.
-
03
What the site has to do
A contact form is simple. Online booking, payments, client logins or a shop each add work, because each has to be built, tested and kept safe.
-
04
Languages and markets
Every extra language means translated pages and its own search setup. Prices in more than one currency add a little more.
-
05
Connections to your tools
Linking the site to a CRM, a booking calendar, an accounting tool or a payment provider is quoted per connection, after we have seen what the tool allows.
-
06
Speed and search work
Basic Google setup comes with every site. Full on-page SEO, a Google Business Profile and analytics come with the custom-coded package.
