Texas in numbers
Official Texas figures that change what a website ends up costing and what it has to do.
- Highest combined sales tax rate
- 8.25%
- In 2026 the Comptroller lists a 6.25 percent state rate, and local taxes can add up to 2 percent more. Only 80 percent of a data processing charge is taxed, so at the top rate the tax works out to about 6.6 percent of a website's price.

- Special purpose districts that add sales tax
- 510
- The Comptroller's 2026 list counts 510 special purpose districts that collect sales tax on top of state, city, county and transit tax. The tax on the same website can differ from one Texas address to the next, so look up the rate for yours.

- Transit authorities that add sales tax
- 10
- As of 2026 the Comptroller lists six metropolitan transit authorities, two city transit departments, one county transit authority and one advanced transportation district that collect sales tax, in areas such as Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio. Where a website charge is taxable, transit tax there is added to the state rate.

- Privacy law penalty per violation
- Up to $7,500
- Under the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act, in force since July 1, 2024, only the Attorney General enforces the law and can seek up to $7,500 for each violation once a 30-day notice to cure has passed. Ask what personal data your site's forms, analytics and ad pixels will collect.

§1
Building a website is a taxable service in Texas
The Texas Comptroller's Taxable Services guide (January 2026) lists web hosting and web site creation and maintenance as data processing services, which Texas taxes. Using a computer only as a tool to help perform a professional service is not data processing, so a project that mixes services can be treated differently. Ask every studio whether its quote includes Texas sales tax, and check with the Comptroller if you are unsure.

§2
Only 80% of the charge is taxed
The Comptroller says twenty percent of the charge for data processing services is exempt from tax, so sales tax falls on the other 80 percent. When you compare a quote that adds Texas tax with one that does not, work out the tax on 80 percent of the price, not on all of it.

§3
The local rate depends on where you are
Texas charges 6.25 percent state sales and use tax. Cities, counties, special purpose districts and transit authorities can add up to 2 percent more, for a combined maximum of 8.25 percent. Two Texas businesses can pay different tax on the same website, so look up the rate for your own address on the Comptroller's site.

The Texas Data Privacy and Security Act
Since July 1, 2024 the Act has applied to businesses that do business in Texas or offer products or services used by Texas residents and that process or sell personal data. Businesses that meet the SBA's small business definition are generally exempt, but they still may not sell a consumer's sensitive data without consent. Businesses the Act covers must give a clear privacy notice. Ask a lawyer which rules apply to you before a site with forms, analytics or ad pixels goes live.

30 days to report a data breach
Since September 1, 2023, Business & Commerce Code section 521.053 has required a business whose breach involves at least 250 Texas residents to notify the Attorney General as soon as practicable and no later than 30 days after determining that the breach happened, using the form on the Attorney General's website. Ask any studio how it keeps forms and customer data secure, and who would tell you if something went wrong.

What moves the price
Six things that decide the cost
Storvexa Your quote, line by line
-
01
Pages and content
Five pages cost less than twenty. Writing the copy, finding photos and moving content from an old site all take time, so say up front who supplies them.
-
02
Theme or custom code
A premium WordPress theme is the quickest and cheapest route. A site written in our own code costs more, loads faster and has no page-builder plugins to keep updating.
-
03
What the site has to do
A contact form is simple. Online booking, payments, client logins or a shop each add work, because each has to be built, tested and kept safe.
-
04
Languages and markets
Every extra language means translated pages and its own search setup. Prices in more than one currency add a little more.
-
05
Connections to your tools
Linking the site to a CRM, a booking calendar, an accounting tool or a payment provider is quoted per connection, after we have seen what the tool allows.
-
06
Speed and search work
Basic Google setup comes with every site. Full on-page SEO, a Google Business Profile and analytics come with the custom-coded package.
