The short answer
Website prices for an Illinois business
For a small business in Illinois, a website of up to 5 pages on a premium WordPress theme starts at $799 with us and takes about 15 days. A custom-coded site of up to 8 pages, built in Astro, Next.js or React, starts at $1,999 and takes about 4 weeks. Fixing an existing site starts at $249, and looking after it costs $49 a month. Before you compare quotes, ask each studio which parts are licensed themes or plugins and which are custom work, because Illinois taxes canned software and custom programs differently.

Official figures · Illinois
Illinois in numbers
Job counts from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics show which Illinois sectors are busiest, and so which businesses are most likely to need a site that brings in work. Figures are for September 2026 and are preliminary.
- Construction jobs in Illinois (September 2026, preliminary)
- 254,500
- Construction employment in Illinois was up 6.0% on a year earlier. A contractor competing for that work needs a site that shows past jobs, the area served and a quick way to ask for a quote.

- Leisure and hospitality jobs in Illinois (September 2026, preliminary)
- 612,200
- Restaurants, hotels and venues account for more than 600,000 jobs in the state, up 1.4% in a year. For these businesses a website mostly has to do three things well on a phone: menu or rooms, booking, and directions.

- Professional and business services jobs, Chicago metro area (September 2026, preliminary)
- 814,400
- Firms such as accountants, consultants and agencies make up the Chicago metro area's second-largest job sector. Their buyers compare providers online, so a site that explains services clearly and loads fast carries more weight than decoration.

Illinois rules to check before you buy a website
These are rules set by Illinois itself, on top of the federal points in our US guide. They are here so you know what to ask; they are not tax or legal advice.
-
§1
Canned software is taxed; custom programs may not be
Illinois treats canned software, meaning software intended for general or repeated use, as taxable tangible personal property however it is delivered. Custom programs prepared to a customer's special order may not be taxable, but prewritten programs that are only assembled into a package count as custom only after real and substantial changes. Software that is only accessed in the cloud and never downloaded is not taxed. Ask every studio to list licensed themes and plugins separately from custom work, and check with the Illinois Department of Revenue.

§2
Fingerprints and face scans need written consent first (BIPA)
Under the Biometric Information Privacy Act, a private business may not collect a retina or iris scan, fingerprint, voiceprint, or scan of hand or face geometry unless it first tells the person in writing, states in writing the specific purpose and how long it will be kept, and receives a written release. The Illinois Supreme Court held in January 2019 that a person can sue without showing any harm beyond the violation. If your site or app adds face login, ID checks or voice features, ask how consent is collected.

§3
A breach of customer data must be disclosed without delay
The Illinois Personal Information Protection Act (815 ILCS 530) requires any business that handles nonpublic personal information of Illinois residents to tell them about a breach in the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay, and certain businesses must also notify the Attorney General. Ask your studio where form entries and customer accounts are stored, who can reach them, and who helps you if something leaks.

Local sales taxes sit on top of the state tax and change twice a year
Illinois lets units of local government add their own taxes, and the Department of Revenue collects several of them, including home rule municipal sales taxes. The state's general merchandise category includes prewritten and canned computer software, and local rates are generally subject to change twice a year, on January 1 and July 1. If you buy theme, plugin or software licenses yourself, look up the rate for your address in the MyTax Illinois Tax Rate Finder.

What moves the price
Six things that decide the cost
Storvexa Your quote, line by line
-
01
Pages and content
Five pages cost less than twenty. Writing the copy, finding photos and moving content from an old site all take time, so say up front who supplies them.
-
02
Theme or custom code
A premium WordPress theme is the quickest and cheapest route. A site written in our own code costs more, loads faster and has no page-builder plugins to keep updating.
-
03
What the site has to do
A contact form is simple. Online booking, payments, client logins or a shop each add work, because each has to be built, tested and kept safe.
-
04
Languages and markets
Every extra language means translated pages and its own search setup. Prices in more than one currency add a little more.
-
05
Connections to your tools
Linking the site to a CRM, a booking calendar, an accounting tool or a payment provider is quoted per connection, after we have seen what the tool allows.
-
06
Speed and search work
Basic Google setup comes with every site. Full on-page SEO, a Google Business Profile and analytics come with the custom-coded package.
